The exterior is bold, with what appears to be translucent panels integrated into the design of the doors. In the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept, the doors opened scissor-style to permit access to the front and rear seats. It appears this wild detail is to be included in the production model when it arrives in 2013.
BMW i8 features at glance:
-lightweight CFRP for skin
-sourced from the i3
-a rear-mounted 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol
-a twin-speed transmission to turn the front wheels
-dual clutch transmission
-two drive systems is 349HP and 550 Nm (405.6 lb-ft) of torque
-Sprint to 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) takes just 4.6 seconds and top speed is electronically limited at 250 km/h (155 mph)
-the 2+2-seater i8 returns an average fuel consumption of just 2.7 lt/100 km (87mpg US)
The BMW i8 is one of two vehicles BMW has planned for its new green-minded “i” sub-brand. First to arrive will be the BMW i3, a compact 4-seat electric vehicle intended for urban driving. Further up the price and performance scale, the i8 will be powered by a hybrid system incorporating a small gasoline-powered engine—though the exact specifics and power output have not yet been released. BMW has promised that the performance of the i8 will be in keeping with that of the brand’s other sports models. Other vehicles will then be added to the “i” lineup after the launch of the i3 and i8.
With such resources, the new BMW i8 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4,6 seconds and achieves a top speed of 250 km/h. Of course, the price could be the only setback of this innovative model, current rumors announcing a price tag of over USD150,000.
